FactoryFlow is built by fabricators, for fabricators — and it started because of a problem we had ourselves. A couple of years ago our own information was spread across spreadsheets, paperwork, emails, whiteboards and different systems. The business functioned, but too much time went on chasing information, duplicating work and establishing what was actually happening with a job. So we went to market for an ERP system that would bring everything into one place, from first enquiry through to invoicing.

The implementation became a long and difficult process. The software felt rigid, and workflows that looked logical in a demonstration didn't translate into the way a fabrication business operates day to day. Fabrication isn't always predictable: drawings change, materials arrive late or partially, priorities move, customers bring dates forward and capacity shifts. Around 18 months in, we were creating workarounds and spending more time feeding the system than it was saving us. Rather than keep forcing the business around software that didn't suit the way we worked, we decided to build something around the way fabrication, engineering and manufacturing businesses actually operate.

The principle was simple: if every department worked from a different building — or a different country — could the job still move seamlessly from one to the next? Could somebody open a job and immediately see where it is, what has happened, what needs to happen next, whether material has arrived, what Production is doing, whether there are quality issues and who owns the next action? Information should live against the job and become visible to the people who need it as soon as it happens. When Sales and Production finally work from the same live picture, the conversation changes and the business starts operating as one connected workflow.
